Welcome to the Tanzaniaherps website

Tanzaniaherps is a cooperative long-term project of the Museo Tridentino Scienze Naturali, Trento, Italy (MTSN)  and the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (UDSM), with the collaboration of the Institute of Biogeography of the University of Basel, Switzerland.

Tanzaniaherps serves two primary purposes. The first purpose is to provide the most current information available on the herpetofauna of Tanzanian Mountains, including information on life history, habitat, status, threats, management concerns and distribution.

The second purpose is to obtain additional information about Tanzania amphibians and reptiles (Tanzaniaherps Atlas). To obtain reliable information, submitted records will be evaluated by experts and once confirmed will be added to the list of accepted records and the contributor to the list of contributors, all the information will be available online.

Information obtained through this project will be used to track the current status of each species, document species occurrences, analyze population trends, identify critical habitat and establish conservation priorities.

Audience

Tanzaniaherps Atlas was created for Tanzanian students, researchers, field personnel and dedicated amateurs interested in reptiles and amphibians of Tanzania, as well as individuals involved in land management activities, policymaking and conservation efforts.
